'Oh, I have slipped the surly bonds of earth ...'

Fourth of July 2006 - Shuttle Launch: 'Discovery'

High Flight
by John Gillespie Magee, Jr.

Oh, I have slipped the surly bonds of earth,
And danced the skies on laughter-silvered wings;
Sunward I've climbed, and joined the tumbling mirth
Of sun-split clouds...and done a hundred things
You have not dreamed of...wheeled and soared and swung
High in the sunlit silence. Hov'ring there,
I've chased the shouting wind along, and flung
My eager craft through footless halls of air.
Up, up, the long, delirious burning blue
I've topped the windswept heights with easy grace
Where never lark, nor even eagle flew.
And while with silent, lifting mind I've trod
The high untrespassed sanctity of space...
...put out my hand, and touched the face of God.

The STS-121 crew displays the spirit of the Fourth of July holiday with their flags and their eagerness to launch as they stride out of the Operations and Checkout Building. Leading the way are Pilot Mark Kelly (left) and Commander Steven Lindsey (right). Behind them are Mission Specialists (second row) Lisa Nowak and Michael Fossum; (third row) Stephanie Wilson and Piers Sellers; and (at the rear) Thomas Reiter, who represents the European Space Agency. I was so moved by the launch of the Shuttle Discovery ... and nervously watched as it approached that critical separation stage. When it came ... I got goosebumps as I watched our Astronauts move safely away ... towards Space. Amazing. Beautiful. Meaningful tribute on Independence Day in the U.S. My prayers will be with the Crew ... and all who help them travel through the skies. Bless them all!

In tribute,

Brenda

brenda, what an awesome experience to be a part of--to actually see the launch in person. that may be something i'd like to do one day. i never even thought about it before, but it's a great experience. these are great pics. you took these? if you did, you have such a great gift for taking pics, along with carol, peg, and some of the other ladies.

congrats on your new work project. enjoy your day!

blessings,
sylvia

Wow, Brenda! I love these shots! I've always been fascinated by space exploration. I remember all the excitement over landing on the moon on July 20, 1969 (my Mom's 69th birthday) and we were all glued to the TV. Then, the tragedy in Jan. '86 when Crista MacCauliffe died with the crew. That was so meaningful to me as she would have been the first teacher in space. My prayers also go to all of this crew plus those helping them along the way.

Those pictures are stunning.
We watched on tv and held our breath until it was up and away safely. Then we cheered.
A stunning display for the 4th of July!!

Thanks much! Actually - we just saw the plume - from way, way, way far away - but it is still amazing that you can see it - across the state! Cape Canaveral is SE of Tampa (I was in Largo - even further west). But I've seen that sight many times over the years - as we would always run outside and look in that direction - and sure enough - you could see those faint plume clouds in the distance.

I did acutally go to the Cape one year - about 1978 - with my parents, younger brother, husband and 2 year old son. We watched what was called 'the last manned space launch'. I went along - but hadn't really thought much about it ... and was actually quite unprepared for the emotions that welled up inside of me when the final countdown started - and the shuttle launched. It was one of the most beautiful sights I had ever seen ... and I was in awe. The ground shook beneath us ... and people were quiet - until after separation - then there was a huge cheer. Pretty cool! And - of course - when the Space Program was restarted - the manned Space flights began again.

As far as those photos - I can't take credit for them ... as they came from the NASA website photo gallery (the link it at the bottom of my post - and they had lots more photos). I just thought the photos were beautiful.

And, Leslie, I was actually thinking about Challenger the other day as well. It's hard not to. I was in Jackson, Mississippi, on a photo shoot at a chicken processing plant when it happened. We didn't know about it until we got back to our rooms that night. I couldn't watch the TV - and though I normally sleep with the TV on - I kept it off the entire week that I was there. My client and I briefly spoke of it - but I welled up - and he knew better than to continue the conversation. The only way that I could get through the shoot without crying - was to just pretend it didn't happen. When I got home - I immediately turned on the TV - to the news stations - and watched ... and just sat and broke down crying - a weeks worth of tears. That was such a sad day.

This launch - I was thinking on Tuesday - that they never tell us about the Astronauts ... and they just kind of lump them all together. I thought, how sad that people have to die for us to know who they are. But, surprisingly, a short time later (on CNN), they showed pictures of each of the crew ... and told all kinds of details - from where they went to school, what their degrees were in (or specialties) ... and even had 'fun facts' - like what their favorite games were ... or ice cream ... stuff like that. I stood and watched - and I was so glad that they did that. That's why I put the photo and names on my Blog. I just felt it was good to recognize them in that way. : )

Anyway ... I'm glad you enjoyed the photos and the tribute!

Well ... I only got 2 1/1 hours sleep last night ... and need to take a little 'snooze' - just for a few minutes. I made the mistake of drinking a Root Beer with my dinner - and boy, did it really keep me awake. Won't do that again! : )

You take care!

Brenda

Wow...Wow...Wow!!!
Amazing pictures Brenda and thanks so much for posting them.
My son used to live in Melbourne, FL and he told me a few times about the ground shaking during the launches...felt like he was back in California :)

I used to be an operator for Norad in Colorado Springs and we communicated with Vandenburg AFB here during their launches.

I also remember the first landing on the moon in 1969. My daughter was just 4 months old and I was a telephone operator for Pacific Telephone in Torrance...I was late for work that day because I was glued to the TV ( I called in and it was fine)
Funny how we always remember where we were when important events happen.

I will keep the crew of the Space Shuttle in my prayers until they are safely home again...

Hi Brenda...Just me again...
Wanted to let you know that I'm glad you're back and I enjoyed looking at your pictures and reading what you've been up to...
You've been very busy lately and it's understandable that you needed a break. I've done it myself from time to time and I think everyone understands.

Hi All,
I'm among the living! I've lost touch with blogging. I'm working now and just moved into my new house I built. One of these days I may get all the boxes unpacked, ugh! Great to read all the blogs!

Brenda, good mornin to ya! :)

The safe launch of the Shuttle Discovery was a blessing to all of us who prayed for its safe take-off and return. Yes, even for those of us down in the tropics who do care about the US space program.

Today has been one of reflection for me as I look back on the past year as July is my blogversary i.e. blogging anniversary~lol~ and all the friends I have made through the blogs like yourself.

Can you believe it! I even went back to your October 2005 audio post just so that I could put a voice with your face. Last October my 'puter did not have audio so missed out then.

It's been great knowing you Brends and I hope we continue to blog together for a long time, amen~lol~

Totally Awesome Photos!!!!and totally Awesome You, Clickgirl!!!
You never cease to amaze me!!!

See, if you had not shared them with us, I would have missed the entire event, where was I????

On one of the georgous lakes up here in these glorious mountains of Western North Carolina.

I am finding some free time to work on my floating log cabin which is solar powered and no TV. and my friend Cooper has a place on another mountain lake near by, so I am just lake hopping sometimes.

Your friend here in these hills seems to be finding lots of places to buy, this area is just exploding with people coming in from all areas. We will have to investigate his places, not to ignore mine (finished or unfinished0, I have some interesting properties, as well, but it seems that my projects are always evolving!!!!

I have thought about the AT outing for some time. The Trail comes very close to this area in at least 4 different places, so we could take our pick on what section to hike. Maybe a short hike at first and build up, I thought that lots of the ladies we met through our connection here on-line would be up for that and somehow I sensed that you would or maybe we talked in Chicago about it??? But you must come to the mountains, as soon as you are available in the fall!

Good luck on the Wedding plans, my daughter was wed 2 years ago, it is quite an undertaking!!!!

Closing from the Marilyn Monroe Room at the Nostalgic Starlight Motel in Cherokee, NC.

Seems that this is the only place that I have time to get on-line, I am going to have to get something other than dial-up, pretty soon.
I do not have the technology to dial up from most of the remote locations I have been frequenting.
Love to all!!!

P.S. Congrats to everyone who has trimmed off pounds, no one understand more than this Dietitian how difficult that is, I think it is time for me to lose 5 to 8, according to the swimsuits that I have been living in, lately!!!!

Hi there Brenda,

I took a break from studying tonight and finally watched "A History of Violence." What an incredible film! I have to say, though, that the kitchen scene at the end was utterly devastating. Made me want to cry for them all.

I hope all's well in your world.

Hi Brenda,
How exciting to have your son getting married so soon. It got crazy when my son got married a few years ago. I took the week off before, we all stayed on the beach, I even scheduled in some beach days for me. One must relax and enjoy the whole process.
Have an awesome day. And take lots of pictures to share.
